In Russian prisons, correspondence serves as a vital lifeline for political prisoners, offering hope and support amidst harsh conditions. After Alexei Navalny's death in 2024, his letters revealed a last bastion of freedom. Political prisoners fear this connection being severed. Navalny and 15 others were exchanged in August 2024 for imprisoned Russians, including espionage suspects. In Paris, Navalny thanked the thousands who wrote to him during his detention. A year after his death, hundreds gathered at his grave, while international tensions and repression of dissent persist in Russia.
